Having a brighter and whiter smile can improve your smile and boost your confidence.
Why Are My Teeth Yellow or Gray? And What Is Teeth Whitening?
Enamel is translucent meaning light can pass through to the dentin layer underneath, which is naturally yellow. As you age, your dentin will become darker, and therefore your teeth will appear more yellow or grayish. Certain foods and drinks, such as berries, red wine, tea, and coffee will also stain your teeth.
If you are unhappy with the color of your teeth and desire a whiter smile, then teeth whitening may be the solution for you. Teeth whitening uses chemical agents placed on your teeth to penetrate your enamel and break down stain molecules.
There are two ways to whitening your teeth. The first way is using over-the-counter products such as whitening strips. These whitening strips are a one-size-fits-all approach, and may not fit securely against your teeth. This often results in whitening solution contacting your gums, which feels irritating.
The second way is to use custom-made trays that our office creates for you.
What Are the Steps for Teeth Whitening?
There are two appointments, both of which are short. At the first appointment, your dental assistant will take an impression of your upper and lower teeth. These impressions will be used to make models of your teeth from which we make custom trays. You will return for the second appointment in about one week to receive your custom bleaching kit. Your dentist will go over instructions on how to use your bleaching kit.
How Often Do I Need to Re-Touch?
Initially, it may take a couple of weeks or months to get your desired whiteness. Once you are happy with the whiteness of your teeth, it is recommended to stop using your whitening solution. Depending on your behavioral and dietary habits, you may need to re-touch your teeth every six to 12 months.
How White Should Your Teeth Look?
A good rule of thumb is that the color of your teeth should match the white of your eyes.
